BE JOYFUL IN

HOPE

How do I arrange a Christening or Wedding?

We are delighted to welcome many families to St John's church each year wanting their children christened. Baptisms are usually held on the first Sunday of each month at 11.15am. This joyful service marks the beginning of a person's life as a Christian, we give thanks to God for the gift of life, and that Jesus came to save us from death and evil. Adults who are baptized make a series of promises about following Jesus Christ, and when a child is christened their godparents make those promises on their behalf. We therefore ask that parents and godparents make a commitment between them to attend some preparation, to help you think more deeply about what being a Christian means. There is no charge for arranging a Baptism service, although you must make sure you speak with the Parish Clerk, between 11 and 11.30am on a Sunday morning to book a date in the diary. Don't arrange a party until you know when the service will be happening. If you live outside St John's parish you are welcome to come to St John's for baptism with the permission of your local clergy. This important milestone in life is open to all, adults and children, wanting to follow Jesus Christ.

Weddings are intimate and public, a day when husband and wife bring their families and friends together and declare that their love will last for life. Today some people are put off getting married by the cost, and it is true that some people spend thousands on a perfect day. Getting married is only partly about the wedding day, it is mainly about beginning a journey together, for 'better for worse, for richer for poorer'. The church service, which is the heart of the day, costs in the region of £500 - £600, a lot less than many civil wedding venues. St John's is a beautiful and historic building which makes the perfect venue for your marriage service. Anyone who lives in the parish has a right to be married in the church, as do those who have one of a number of personal connections with the church, e.g. if your parents or grandparents were married here. At present the Church of England does not offer same-sex marriage services.

If you would like to mark a significant anniversary, or ask for God's blessing after a civil marriage, please speak with Fr. Philip.

To book a wedding please come on a Sunday morning to the 10am service and afterwards ask to speak with the Parish Clerk, Mr. Parfitt.
